According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly half of consumer businesses fail before they reach their 5th birthday- and Business Insider reports that 82% of companies fail because of cash flow mismanagement. In particular, we believe that the currently high cost of capital makes it more difficult for consumer businesses to accelerate- making it all the more important to deploy capital wisely.

In the past two decades, we have witnessed hundreds of young companies with great products end in failure, mainly because, in our opinion, they were undercapitalized, did not know how to scale operations efficiently when they needed to, and extended themselves too far before they were ready. We believe that with some strategically deployed capital and strong operational oversight, those same companies likely would have succeeded because they had already proven product-market fit.

While we only invest in early-stage consumer businesses, we do provide consulting and advisory services to larger companies as well.  As any consumer business grows, the complexity of their operations inevitably grows and changes. Optimizing a supply chain for a $25 million direct-to-consumer snacks manufacturer is likely to be wildly different than re-imagining the end-to-end supply chain at a multi-channel, $75 billion big box retailer. Likewise, determining manufacturing partners for a startup personal care brand is very different from optimizing warehouse labor and technology spend at a $20 million bedding company, or choosing inventory management software packages at a $1 billion specialty retailer.
